  • cheap, small, huge storage

I stopped using Iomega products several years ago (remember the infamous "click of death" infesting Iomega Zip drives?) But after reading the Amazon reviews, I decided to get the Iomega 1TB drive. It is about half the size of my old 350 GB Maxtor hard drives, costs half as much, and has three times the storage capacity! I plugged it in and Windows XP had it up and running in seconds, no fuss.

As a test, I transferred two gigs of photos (I’m a photojournalist) and it backed up two gigs in two minutes. It is almost perfectly silent. I didn’t bother downloading the free Retrospect Backup software; I always back up manually as part of my business routine. If I ever have a problem with this drive, I’ll update this review. Otherwise,

  • Iomega Prestige and my Mac

Since my iMac computer with OS X 10.5.8 was practically new, I engaged the Time Machine feature for the first time. My computer then began to download a copy of my iMac’s HD (54GB and over 767.000 files) to my new Iomega Prestige HD. The process took about 6 hours, which I understand is common for using Time Machine the first time. Despite the huge download, the Iomega Prestige HD performed very well. The light strip along the side just kept blinking as it soaked up the new files, and never got hot.

By comparison, my impression is that the unit runs much cooler than the LaCie. It was absolutely quiet. My 2nd LaCie ran like a tank by comparison. Installation of the Iomega was easier than with LaCie. it was also less costly. The new Lacie Quadra HD 1TB external H
